Pulling in lay people

We had a 70+ altar server at Mass who obviously had never done this or had not done it for 60 years. It turned out to be absolutely comical. He confused water with the wine, brought things up and took them away in the wrong order etc. etc. It was a funny to watch. He had white hair, wore a white alb, had on white slacks and wore white shoes. He gave the impression of a mental warden in a 1930ies hospital and acted just like one. Who said the Mass was boring?
