Today we had a mother with three boys come to morning Mass. OK - nice you would like to say but then you watch the following: The oldest who is old enough to receive Holy Communion can't keep his eyes open and wants to go to sleep at his mother's arm. He continuously yawns. He does not know how to cross himself. No clue. And of course there is no Amen after receiving Holy Communion. For some strange reason he pulls up his legs and dirty sneakers and rests them on the upholstered chairs.
Boy would I like to run a First Communion Boot Camp. Folks - receiving Holy Communion is not a factory job where you punch a clock and wait for the bell to ring signalling dismissal. While children might not understand the more profound aspects, they can be taught reverence, which was totally lacking today. Who the heck was the catechist?
