The Nephew

The nephew called today. That part is really sweet of him. He does call his auntie. What is not so sweet is that he  is a professed atheist. Then again he was never taught anything. Don't know if he was baptized. Right now he is in Portugal. I asked him if was was in Fatima. He said he was years ago. That would have just been a visit out of curiosity not religiosity. Sort of a visit as in: "What are the natives doing here?" He has colon cancer that is in remission and for a fleeting moment I thought he might turn to religion when his cancer was detected but that fleet came and went. The fleet sailed away.
He has two sisters. One is perennially unemployed which is not a bad lifestyle where she lives and the other sister does work and with children in social services. I could not do this kind of work. Their mother died perhaps ten years ago. Subsequently father (my brother) and children were at each other's throat. Their father died two years ago. Not sure anyone bothered to go to the funeral but I can't blame the children. Some people do not get Alzheimers but in old age present themselves with a stubbornness that is against all common sense. My brother was one of them.
We cannot choose our relatives.
